Nordic Ren-Gas and Etelä-Savon Energia Advance Mikkeli Power-to-Gas Project

Key highlights
  • The Mikkeli Power-to-Gas plant aims to start commercial production by the end of 2026.
  • The plant will produce over 12,000 tons of synthetic methane annually.
  • The project will utilize more than 50 MW of electrical input.
  • Carbon dioxide will be collected from the Pursiala power plant for renewable gas production.

Project Overview

Etelä-Savon Energia Oy and Nordic Ren-Gas Oy have signed a project development agreement for the Mikkeli Power-to-Gas plant, which will produce renewable methane, green hydrogen, and district heating. The plant is planned for the Pursiala industrial area, with Ren-Gas as the main developer.

Technical Details

The plant will have an electrical input of over 50 MW and is expected to produce approximately 12,000 tons of synthetic methane annually. Carbon dioxide will be collected from the Pursiala power plant to aid in the production of renewable synthetic gas. Additionally, process heat from the plant will be utilized in Mikkeli’s district heating network, reducing reliance on combustion-based heat production.

Timeline and Development

The project aims to reach a final investment decision and begin construction by 2024, with commercial production targeted by the end of 2026. The permitting process has already commenced.

Background and Market Context

The project follows a preliminary study in 2021 and a feasibility analysis in 2022, which confirmed the suitability of the Pursiala site. The increasing demand for clean gas in Europe supports a strong market environment for domestic renewable gas fuels.
