Investment and inauguration

Metsä Group inaugurated the expanded and modernised Mariestad tissue mill on 26 May following a €370 million investment, described in the release as one of the largest investments in the European tissue industry.

Production capacity and equipment

The renewed mill doubles annual production capacity to approximately 145,000 tonnes. The upgrade includes a new state‑of‑the‑art tissue paper machine and three new converting lines for rolled and folded tissue products to produce Metsä Tissue brands such as Lambi, Serla and Katrin.

Markets and schedule

The mill produces tissue papers for household and professional hygiene applications and is intended to strengthen availability for customers across Scandinavia. Operations started in the fall of 2025 and the facility is now fully operational.

Environmental performance

The investment is reported to improve the mill’s environmental performance via better energy efficiency, reduced water consumption and lower emissions per tonne produced.
