Metsä Group’s planned wood‑based carbon dioxide capture plant in Rauma has been awarded EUR 21 million in aid under Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment reverse auction, where support was granted to projects requiring the lowest aid per unit of capture capacity.
Project scope and capture point
The project would capture biogenic CO2 from the flue gases of the recovery boiler at the Rauma pulp mill, creating a new industrial value chain by converting an existing side stream into a commercial product.
Capacity and end‑use
The planned capture capacity is 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Metsä Group’s customers are expected to use the captured wood‑based CO2 in e‑fuel production, with the company noting that using this volume annually in a fuel value chain would avoid fossil CO2 emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 30,000 passenger cars.
Conditions and timeline
A final investment decision can be considered no earlier than the start of 2027 and is subject to obtaining an environmental permit, completing engineering for the capture plant and securing sufficient market demand. The awarded aid will only be paid if the investment is carried out.
