Investment and Facility Details
Merck is investing €62 million in a new quality control building at its Darmstadt headquarters. The facility, spanning nearly 10,000 square meters, will bring together approximately 135 employees from various departments into a collaborative space. The building is scheduled for completion by mid-2025 and is part of a larger €1.5 billion investment program at the Darmstadt site.
Quality Control Importance
Quality control is crucial for ensuring the safety of life science products used in research, discovery, and medicine manufacturing. During this process, products are tested for purity to detect and remove harmful substances. Merck’s Life Science business operates over 25 labs specializing in these methods.
Sustainability and Compliance
The new facility will meet the German Sustainable Building Council GOLD standard for sustainability. It will feature regenerative energy generation, low-CO2 construction, and comply with safety requirements for genetic engineering and biology laboratories. Additionally, the labs will be GMP-compliant and include dust-free environments with specific hygiene protocols.
Strategic Importance of Darmstadt
Darmstadt is a key research and development center for Merck's life science technologies. Over the next decade, approximately one-fifth of the Life Science business' sales from new products are expected to originate from this site. The goal is to expand capacities and capabilities to meet the growing global demand for medicines.
