Contract and scope
Lhyfe was awarded a multi-year contract to supply green hydrogen to BMW Group’s Steyr site for series development, industrialisation, testing and validation of the third-generation fuel-cell system slated for series production from 2028.
Role of Steyr site
The Steyr centre will handle series development and subsequent industrialisation of BMW’s hydrogen propulsion system for the new X5, targeting a more compact, powerful and efficient system to increase range and reduce energy consumption.
Supply, certification and logistics
Lhyfe will make its first deliveries in Austria using its bulk hydrogen transport fleet; in 2025 the company completed more than 850 deliveries across Europe. Lhyfe operates four RFNBO-certified production sites in France and Germany with a combined capacity of up to 8.5 tonnes of green hydrogen per day and plans two additional sites in France by year-end, enabling RFNBO-compliant deliveries across Europe.
