LBC Tank Terminals expands Rotterdam terminal with Rainbow 5 Phase A, adding 41,000 m³

Key highlights
  • Project Rainbow 5 Phase A adds approximately 41,000 cubic meters, increasing total capacity to about 295,000 m³.
  • The phase includes construction of 14 storage tanks to replace legacy assets and improve safety, efficiency and flexibility.
  • Works include a second central truck loading station and new connections to existing jetty infrastructure.
  • Commissioning is targeted for end 2028; the decision follows the recent commissioning of Rainbow 3 (36 tanks and a rail tank car loading station).

Project scope

LBC Tank Terminals has taken the final investment decision on Rainbow 5 Phase A at its Rotterdam Terminal. The project will add approximately 41,000 cubic metres of storage capacity through the construction of 14 storage tanks, bringing the terminal’s total capacity to around 295,000 cubic metres.

Infrastructure and sustainability measures

Rainbow 5 Phase A replaces legacy assets with next‑generation facilities designed to enhance safety, operational flexibility and efficiency. The scope includes a second central truck loading station to handle growing truck volumes and new connections to the terminal’s existing jetty infrastructure. The project will apply sustainable development principles used in prior phases, such as material reuse and lower‑carbon construction methods.

Timeline and context

Commissioning is targeted for end 2028. The decision follows the recent delivery of Rainbow 3, which comprised 36 storage tanks and a rail tank car loading station. LBC describes Rainbow 5 Phase A as one of the first major expansion projects under MOL’s ownership and part of a multi‑year expansion programme to serve chemical and energy‑transition flows.
