WHO's Decision

The World Health Organization (WHO) has added broad-spectrum sunscreen with high SPF to its Model List of Essential Medicines (EML) and the Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (EMLc). This decision aims to improve access and affordability of sunscreen, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Application and Advocacy

The inclusion follows a 2024 application by the Global Albinism Alliance, in collaboration with the United Nations Independent Expert on the Enjoyment of Human Rights by Persons with Albinism and other partners, including Beyond Suncare. This collective effort presented a unified, evidence-based case to the WHO.

Impact on Vulnerable Populations

The decision highlights the importance of sun protection for vulnerable groups, especially individuals with albinism. It encourages countries to prioritize sunscreen in their health systems, ensuring essential protection for those in need.

BASF's Role

Since 2014, BASF has supported Beyond Suncare by providing expertise and ingredients for effective, customized sunscreens for people with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa. This partnership focuses on creating formulations suitable for sensitive skin and providing sun care ingredients at no cost.

Beyond Suncare's Efforts

Beyond Suncare, an NGO based in Spain, advocates for the health rights and social inclusion of people with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa. Recognized as a "Best Practice" by the United Nations since 2017, the NGO has supported over 4,000 individuals with albinism and trained more than 600 healthcare professionals.
