Indaver launches Circulith: certified construction granulate from bottom ash
- OVAM granted end‑of‑waste status for Circulith and Procertus awarded BENOR certification for Marlux‑Stradus concrete paving blocks.
- Indaver’s Doel ash treatment processes ~100,000 tonnes of bottom ash yearly, originating from ~400,000 tonnes of incinerated non‑recyclable waste.
- The facility produces roughly 30,000 tonnes of aggregates annually via washing, screening and advanced separation, and recovers ferrous and non‑ferrous metals.
- Development began in 2016; key milestones include a 2022 Port of Antwerp‑Bruges symbiosis win, a 2023 end‑of‑waste declaration and 2025 BENOR approval for paving blocks.
What Circulith is
Circulith is Indaver’s brand for certified bottom‑ash granulates recovered after thermal treatment of non‑recyclable waste. After washing, screening and advanced separation, the process yields metals, sand fractions and high‑quality granulates while removing unwanted fractions and contaminants under controlled quality checks.
Scale and operations
Indaver’s Doel ash treatment facility treats approximately 100,000 tonnes of bottom ash per year, derived from the thermal treatment of about 400,000 tonnes of non‑recyclable waste in grate incinerators. The process produces roughly 30,000 tonnes of aggregates annually. Indaver plans to expand capacity to accept bottom ash from third‑party waste‑to‑energy facilities.
Certification and application
OVAM granted Circulith end‑of‑waste status for use in concrete paving stones and blocks, and Procertus awarded BENOR certification for the concrete paving blocks produced by Marlux‑Stradus. Marlux‑Stradus uses a limited share of Circulith in the base concrete layer; the visible facing layer remains unchanged. Both raw material and final product are subject to internal controls and independent supervision.
Circular impact and next steps
Using Circulith reduces demand for primary sand and gravel, easing pressure on natural reserves and lowering extraction‑related environmental impacts. Indaver frames the launch as part of a broader circularity strategy requiring technology, collaboration and market development with construction partners, certification bodies and public authorities.
