Project overview
Iberdrola Portugal has started installing battery energy storage systems at the Alcochete I and Algeruz II solar plants in the Setúbal district.
Technical specifications
The two BESS units total 180 MWh of storage capacity (100 MWh at Alcochete I, 80 MWh at Algeruz II) and 45 MW of output (25 MW and 20 MW respectively), providing up to four hours of discharge and enough energy for over 10,000 homes.
Grid role and strategy
The batteries will store surplus solar generation for delivery during periods of demand to aid integration of renewable energy and form part of Iberdrola’s broader storage approach, which combines short-duration batteries with long-duration pumped-storage hydropower.
