Nobian and VERVAEKE Launch Europe's First ADR-Certified Hydrogen Truck for Chemical Transport

Key highlights
  • The hydrogen truck pilot began in February 2026.
  • The truck will operate around Rotterdam, covering 100,000 km annually.
  • It aims to reduce 88.5 tons of CO₂ per 100,000 km.
  • The pilot focuses on transporting ADR-classified chemicals like caustic soda and hydrochloric acid.

Hydrogen Truck Pilot

Nobian and VERVAEKE have launched a hydrogen-powered transport pilot in the Netherlands, marking a significant step towards zero-emission chemical logistics. This initiative introduces the first ADR-certified hydrogen truck in Europe, designed to safely transport hazardous materials and chemical substances.

Project Details

The pilot began in February 2026 and will initially operate on routes around Rotterdam. The truck is expected to cover approximately 100,000 kilometers annually, replacing a diesel truck and aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions by an estimated 88.5 tons per 100,000 km.

Technological Advancements

Hydrogen technology offers advantages such as long range, fast refueling, and lower vehicle weight compared to battery-electric options. This makes it a viable alternative for transporting ADR-classified products like caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, where sustainable options have been limited due to strict safety requirements.

Future Prospects

The pilot may expand as the hydrogen refueling network grows, further supporting the transition to low-carbon operations in the chemical industry. This project is part of broader efforts to scale hydrogen-powered logistics and reduce transport-related CO₂ emissions.
