Galp Sines Refinery Receives Biofuel Reactors

At a glance
  • The reactors will produce biofuels by 2026 at Sines Refinery.
  • The project includes a €650M investment, with €400M for biofuels and €250M for green hydrogen.
  • The biofuels unit is a partnership with Japan's Mitsui, with a capacity of 270,000 tons per year.
  • The facility will process vegetable oils and animal fats into biodiesel and aviation fuel.

Project Overview

Galp's Sines Refinery has received three reactors for its new advanced biofuel production unit, set to begin operations in 2026. This initiative marks a significant milestone as it will be the first advanced biofuel production unit in Europe integrated with an industrial-scale green hydrogen facility, also under construction at the site.

Investment and Capacity

The total investment for these projects is €650 million, with €400 million allocated to the biofuels unit and €250 million to the green hydrogen unit. The biofuels unit, developed in partnership with Japan's Mitsui, will have a production capacity of 270,000 tons per year.

Employment and Economic Impact

During the construction phase, the biofuels project will employ an average of 750 workers, peaking at 1,150. Once operational, it will create 76 permanent jobs, contributing to the local economy and industrial growth in Portugal.

Production Process

The facility will process treated vegetable oils and animal fats, converting them into biodiesel and aviation fuel. The chemical reaction occurs inside the reactors through hydrogen injection and the application of pressure and heat, producing biofuels with characteristics similar to traditional mineral diesel.
