More than twenty people were injured in an explosion and fire at the Melamin chemical factory in Kočevje, southern Slovenia. Two individuals sustained severe burns, and five persons are still missing. The fire has been extinguished, and dangerous substances have been contained, according to Civil Protection and Disaster Relief.

The Melamin building suffered significant damage, and the explosion caused window cracks in nearby buildings. Melamin is classified as a facility of greater environmental risk under current legislation.

Melamin is a major employer in the region, primarily producing resins for paints and varnishes used in the wood, construction, and textile industries. At the end of 2021, the company employed just over 190 people.

In 2021, Melamin generated EUR 67.3 million in sales revenue, marking a 41% increase from the previous year. The net profit rose by 26% to just under EUR 3.3 million.

Historical Context

This incident is the worst industrial fire in Slovenia's recent history. Since 1995, there have been 17 recorded industrial fires in the country, mostly resulting in material damage.
