Honeywell launches Experion Cognition for autonomous control rooms at Borouge Ruwais

Key highlights
  • Experion Cognition was demonstrated in a live proof-of-concept at Borouge International’s Ruwais facility in Abu Dhabi.
  • Operations Assistant pilots predicted alarm incidents on average 5–10 minutes before alarms.
  • The platform automates situation management to increase production, reduce downtime and help address operator workforce and skills shortages.
  • Experion Cognition integrates with Experion PKS and will be commercially available in Q3 2026.

Product

Experion Cognition is an AI-enabled control system platform that makes recommendations and automated decisions to optimise production and increase safety in industrial control rooms. It combines Honeywell’s process automation capabilities with AI models and includes features such as an Operations Assistant.

Proof of concept

Honeywell demonstrated a live proof-of-concept at Borouge International’s Ruwais facility in Abu Dhabi. In multiple pilots, the platform made predictions an average of 5–10 minutes before alarm incidents, allowing proactive detection and mitigation of abnormal situations.

Capabilities and operational impact

The platform is designed to act on behalf of operators to resolve anomalies, reduce process mistakes and downtime, and broaden operator responsibilities. Honeywell positions the technology as a way to address the industrial workforce shortage and skills gap by delegating cognitive tasks to autonomous agents so less experienced operators can perform at levels comparable to seasoned personnel.

Availability and next steps

Experion Cognition is designed to integrate with Honeywell’s Experion PKS distributed control system network and will be commercially available in Q3 2026. Borouge International intends to progress work to further demonstrate autonomous operations and assess opportunities to scale the technology across its Ruwais and global facilities.
