- The facility enhances Evonik's focus on silicone and nanotechnology specialty chemicals.
Facility Overview
Evonik’s new multi-purpose silicones manufacturing facility in Geesthacht, Germany, is now fully operational. The plant, located 30 kilometers outside Hamburg, completed final commissioning tests and received necessary authority approvals despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Production Capabilities
The facility produces silicones and silyl-terminated polymers (SMPs) used in various applications such as parquet adhesive flooring, liquid membranes for roofing, and electronic potting. The additional production capacities aim to provide customers with a faster and more reliable supply of products, including innovative nanotechnologies.
Project Timeline
Following its inauguration in January, the plant began production after engineers conducted small batch runs and essential safety assessments. The facility’s new tank farm was commissioned before the full impact of the Covid-19 virus, allowing the project to stay on schedule despite additional safety measures.
Innovation Focus
The new facility strengthens Evonik’s innovation capabilities, particularly in silicone and nanotechnology specialty chemical products. These include addition-curing silicones and SMPs used as binders for adhesives and sealants in various applications, such as parquet adhesives, wound care, and thermally conductive polymer filling compounds for e-mobility.
