EnviTec Biogas opens first integrated biogas‑to‑biomethane plant in Estonia

Key highlights
  • The plant produces around 600 Nm³ of biomethane per hour using membrane-based upgrading.
  • It is EnviTec’s first fully integrated biogas and gas‑upgrading plant in Estonia, opened on 16 June in Langerma.
  • The project was realised within one year, with Halinga OÜ handling civil works, buildings and site interfaces.
  • EnviTec’s Estonian EnviThan plants now enable about 199 GWh/yr of domestic biomethane supply—equivalent to fuel for ~6,000–7,000 trucks annually.

Project delivery

EnviTec Anlagenbau GmbH & Co. KG commissioned a combined biogas plant and EnviThan membrane gas‑upgrading unit for Halinga OÜ, opening the facility on 16 June in Langerma, Põhja‑Pärnumaa. EnviTec delivered raw biogas production and upgrading; the customer managed civil works, building construction, site setup and interface management. The project was realised within one year.

Technology and capacity

The plant uses EnviTec’s membrane‑based gas upgrading technology and produces around 600 Nm³ of biomethane per hour. EnviTec states its Estonian EnviThan plants can supply approximately 199 GWh of domestically produced biomethane to the Estonian transport sector each year, equivalent to fuel for roughly 6,000–7,000 trucks.

Feedstock and circularity

Feedstock is slurry and organic residues from Halinga’s dairy operation; digested substrates are stored in two lagoons and subsequently applied in agriculture as high‑quality fertiliser. Halinga OÜ operates more than 3,000 animals and manages 3,700 hectares of land.

Market use and support

Biomethane produced is used locally as a climate‑friendly fuel via on‑site CNG refuelling, with main off‑takers including public transport operators in Tartu, Rakvere and Pärnu. The project received funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU Recovery and Resilience Facility. Infortar AS, Halinga’s owner, and partners have invested about EUR 30 million in biomethane plants in the region. EnviTec notes growing market demand, particularly for CO₂ liquefaction and liquid CO₂ applications across the beverage and chemical industries and in synthetic fuel production.
