Eni starts gas production from Maha field offshore Indonesia
- Maha started production 21 months after FID with a capacity of 250 MMSCFD.
- The field has two subsea production wells at ~1,000 m tied to the Jangkrik FPU by ~12 km of flowlines.
- Gas will be processed onboard the Jangkrik FPU and sent via pipeline to domestic markets and the Bontang liquefaction plant.
- Combined Jangkrik FPU and South Hub production reaches a 750 MMSCFD plateau; Gendalo & Gendang tie-in is expected in 2028 to extend the plateau.
Start-up and capacity
The Maha field in the West Ganal block of the Kutei Basin offshore Indonesia has started gas production 21 months after the final investment decision and can produce 250 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD). Combined production from the Jangkrik Floating Production Unit (FPU) and the South Hub reaches a plateau of 750 MMSCFD.
Infrastructure and routing
Maha comprises two subsea production wells at approximately 1,000 m water depth connected to the Jangkrik FPU by about 12 km of flowlines. After initial processing onboard the FPU, gas will be transported through the pipeline network to supply the domestic market and the Bontang liquefaction plant, which supplies LNG for domestic use and export.
Project timeline and adjacent developments
The Gendalo & Gendang project is expected to start up and tie in to the Jangkrik FPU in 2028, extending the plateau beyond the end of the decade. Final investment decisions for the North Hub (Geng North & Gehem) and South Hub (Gendalo & Gendang) were announced in March 2026, and Merakes East started up in May 2025.
Operator, ownership and portfolio
The field is operated by Searah, established in June 2026 and jointly owned 50/50 by Eni and PETRONAS. Searah’s portfolio comprises 19 gas-producing and development assets (14 in Indonesia and 5 in Malaysia); current production is approximately 350 kboe/d with a target to exceed 500 kboe/d by 2028. Stakeholders in the development include Searah’s shareholders and SKK Migas. In October 2026 Eni signed binding agreements to sell interests to Pertamina and Medco in selected upstream assets operated by Searah, and Eni directly operates the Peri-Mahakam PSC, the Makassar Strait PSC and the Sapukala block.
