Eni Discovers Over 1 Tcf of Gas in Libya

Key highlights
  • Two gas discoveries were made in Libya's Bahr Essalam South 2 and 3 structures.
  • The wells are located 85 km offshore in 650 feet of water.
  • Preliminary estimates indicate over 1 Tcf of gas in place.
  • Gas will be supplied to Libya and exported to Italy.

New Discoveries

Eni has announced two new gas discoveries in Libya, resulting from a recent exploration campaign. The discoveries are located in the Bahr Essalam South 2 (BESS 2) and Bahr Essalam South 3 (BESS 3) geological structures.

Location and Drilling

The BESS 2 and BESS 3 structures were drilled by the B2-16/4 and C1-16/4 wells. These wells are situated approximately 85 km off the Libyan coast in about 650 feet of water, and 16 km south of the existing Bahr Essalam gas field.

Reservoir and Capacity

Gas-bearing intervals were found in both wells within the Metlaoui Formation, which is the main productive reservoir in the area. The acquired data confirms a high-quality reservoir, with productive capacity validated by a well test conducted on the first well.

Volume and Development

Preliminary volumetric estimates suggest that the BESS 2 and BESS 3 structures contain more than 1 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas in place. Their proximity to the Bahr Essalam field will facilitate rapid development through tie-back to existing offshore facilities.

Supply and Export

The gas produced from these discoveries will be supplied to the Libyan domestic market and exported to Italy, leveraging the existing infrastructure for efficient distribution.
