- The Biotech Open Platform will receive an initial investment of over €16 million.
- Located in Clermont-Ferrand, it will focus on precision fermentation for bio-based materials.
- By 2025, the project aims to install a demo-scale production line with fermenter and purification equipment.
- The platform will gradually open to other companies for industrial biomanufacturing scale-up.
Investment and Location
Danone, Michelin, DMC Biotechnologies, and Crédit Agricole Centre France are collaborating to create the Biotech Open Platform in Clermont-Ferrand, France. The project will receive an initial investment of over €16 million and will be situated within the Parc Cataroux Center for Sustainable Materials, supported by Michelin.
Focus on Precision Fermentation
The platform aims to advance precision fermentation, a biotechnological process that uses microorganisms to produce bio-based materials and ingredients. This technology is particularly relevant for the agri-food and materials sectors, offering sustainable alternatives to fossil-based resources.
Development and Scale-Up
The Biotech Open Platform's goal is to scale up innovative products and processes that have been tested in the laboratory. By 2025, the project plans to install an initial demo-scale production line, including a fermenter and purification equipment. Additional equipment and a second production line will be added in subsequent years.
Support and Collaboration
The initiative is supported by several public and private institutions, including the University of Clermont Auvergne, Greentech, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and Clermont Auvergne Métropole. The platform will eventually open to other companies facing scale-up challenges in industrial biomanufacturing.
