Covestro and puren advance purenit® with ISCC PLUS certification and Desmodur® CQ MS binder

Key highlights
  • puren commissioned a new production line at Obermarchtal and certified all purenit® production to ISCC PLUS.
  • ISCC PLUS certification enables use of Covestro's Desmodur® CQ MS binder, produced via a mass‑balance approach with bio‑circular MDI.
  • puren will offer a purenit® variant using Desmodur® CQ MS, with market launch planned for 2027.
  • purenit® is an upcycled, high‑density (~550 kg/m³) rigid PUR/PIR board made from polyurethane residuals via an adhesive‑press process.

Certification and production

puren has commissioned a new production line at its Obermarchtal site and certified its entire purenit® production to the ISCC PLUS standard. The certification verifies mass‑balance allocation of bio‑circular feedstocks across the supply chain and allows puren to represent the attributed raw materials in its finished boards.

Binder and product timeline

With ISCC PLUS in place, puren can use Covestro’s Desmodur® CQ MS — an MDI‑based binder supplied with bio‑circular attribution via the mass‑balance approach. puren announced a purenit® product using this binder, targeted for market launch in 2027.

Material and process

purenit® is a highly compressed, rigid PUR/PIR material (~550 kg/m³) produced by an adhesive‑press process that upcycles polyurethane residuals into homogeneous boards. The boards are pressure‑ and moisture‑resistant, dimensionally stable, and compatible with standard woodworking tools for applications across construction, vehicle interiors and maritime fit‑out.

Sustainability and verification

Desmodur® CQ MS is supplied with a reduced carbon footprint claim based on a cradle‑to‑gate LCA and is certified through mass balance; ISCC PLUS independently verifies the allocation. Covestro notes its climate‑neutral statement is derived from an internal cradle‑to‑gate assessment audited to ISO 14040/14044, accounting for biogenic carbon sequestration and without applying compensation measures. The collaboration couples circular raw‑material attribution with material upcycling to lower product emissions while keeping processing unchanged.
