- The Paderborn cement plant closure affects 53 employees.
- Heidelberg Materials offers internal transfers to nearby sites.
- Ternocem production, with lower CO₂ emissions, moves to another site.
Closure of Paderborn Plant
Heidelberg Materials will permanently close its cement plant in Paderborn due to a significant decline in cement sales, driven by weak construction demand in Germany. This decision is part of the company's strategy to optimize its European production network and focus on low-carbon products.
Impact on Employees
The closure affects 53 employees. Heidelberg Materials is working with the workers' council to develop socially responsible solutions, including internal transfers to nearby sites. Open positions at neighboring plants in Geseke and Ennigerloh, created through early retirement programs, will be offered to affected employees.
Continued Operations
The closure applies only to the cement plant. Heidelberg Materials' subsidiary Mineralik will continue its activities in the Paderborn quarry, and the local ready-mixed concrete plant will remain operational.
Ternocem Production
The Paderborn plant operated the smallest rotary kiln in Heidelberg Materials Germany, used since 2022 for trial production of Ternocem®, an innovative cement with significantly lower CO₂ emissions than conventional Portland cement clinker. Future development of Ternocem will continue at another site.
