Expansion of Storage Capacity
Clariant has expanded its storage capacity in Scandinavia to support the increased use of recycled mono propylene glycol (MPG) in aircraft deicing fluids. The Uddevalla facility in Sweden now features two new storage tanks and a truck unloading station, enhancing the handling and storage of recycled MPG.
Environmental Impact
In 2023, the facility began utilizing significant amounts of recycled MPG for Type I deicing products. This shift offers a more than 25% reduction in product carbon footprint compared to products made from virgin fossil-based MPG. The increased use of recycled materials is also aimed at reducing Scope 3 emissions, aligning with Clariant's sustainability goals.
Supply Chain and Operations
The Uddevalla plant serves airports, airlines, and service providers across the Nordic and Baltic countries. The additional storage capacity is expected to optimize operations and improve efficiency, supporting the company's circular economy principles.
Recycling Process
The recycling process begins with the collection of run-off material from deicing operations at airports. This material is then cleaned and pre-concentrated to approximately 50-60% at Clariant’s facility at Oslo airport. The concentrate is transported to a partner for final processing into industrial grade glycol, which is then used at Uddevalla for producing SAFEWING™ Type I deicing products, contributing to closing the recycling loop.
