CDP Ratings
BASF has been recognized by the non-profit organization CDP as a leader in sustainability, receiving an “A” rating for climate and forest protection, and an “A-” for water management. These ratings reflect BASF's commitment to transparency and effective sustainability strategies.
Climate Protection
BASF has participated in CDP’s climate protection data reporting since 2004. The company aims to reduce its CO2 emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by 25% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels, while continuing to grow production. This target aligns with the International Energy Agency's “Net Zero by 2050” pathways, aiming to limit global warming to 1.5°C. BASF also plans to cut specific Scope 3.1 emissions by 15% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Water Management
BASF received an “A-” rating for water security, as CDP guidelines prevent companies producing hazardous substances from receiving an “A”. The assessment considers transparency in water management and efforts to mitigate risks like water scarcity. BASF is implementing sustainable water management at all Verbund sites and in water-stressed areas by 2030, with a 65% target achievement in 2024.
Forest Protection
BASF achieved an “A” rating for forest protection, focusing on the palm oil value chain and its impact on ecosystems. The rating was influenced by BASF’s transparency in disclosing deforestation-relevant raw materials and supply chains, as well as initiatives like smallholder projects in the palm oil supply chain.
