BTG Bioliquids completes basic design for pilot pyrolysis fractionation plant
- Basic design of a pilot pyrolysis fractionation plant completed with support from the Dutch TSE scheme (Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO).
- Liquid-to-liquid fractionation using a polar solvent separates fast pyrolysis bio-oil into pyrolytic lignin, pyrolytic sugars, light phenolics and wood vinegar.
- Pyrolytic lignin has been demonstrated as a potential feedstock for insulation panels.
- Pyrolytic sugars have been incorporated into BioMSAR biofuels for shipping; targeted feedstocks are second‑generation residues from sawmills, pulp and paper and agriculture.
Project and funding
With support from the Dutch TSE scheme (Netherlands Enterprise Agency, RVO), a basic design has been completed for a pilot plant to fractionate fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO).
Process and outputs
The liquid-to-liquid fractionation process uses a polar solvent to produce stable fractions of pyrolytic lignin, pyrolytic sugars, light phenolics and wood vinegar from FPBO.
Applications and feedstock
Work with partners and prior BTG Biomass Technology Group research has explored commercial uses: pyrolytic lignin shows promise for insulation panels, and pyrolytic sugars have been incorporated into BioMSAR biofuels for shipping. The effort targets decarbonizing industries that rely on fossil feedstocks by sourcing materials from second‑generation biomass residues available at sawmills, pulp and paper operations and in agriculture.
