- Brightmark has reduced emissions by over 1.2 million tons of CO2eq through its RNG centers.
- Anaerobic digestion is used to convert organic waste into RNG for transportation fuel.
Project Milestone
Brightmark RNG Holdings LLC has successfully delivered first gas at 10 renewable natural gas (RNG) projects across the Midwest. This achievement marks a significant expansion for the joint venture, which now operates 15 RNG projects in a region responsible for 43% of the nation’s agricultural output.
Environmental Impact
Through its RNG circularity centers, Brightmark has reduced emissions by more than 1.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent. This reduction is comparable to the carbon sequestration achieved by planting and growing nearly 20 million trees over a decade.
Technology and Collaboration
The process of reducing methane emissions involves collaboration with farmers to produce RNG via anaerobic digestion. This method collects organic waste, digests it to extract methane, and upgrades it into RNG for use as transportation fuel.
Industry Perspective
Nuray Elci, Vice President of Renewables at Chevron, emphasized the importance of transitioning to a lower carbon intensity energy economy, highlighting the potential of renewable natural gas. Farmers like Jeremy VanEss and Lynn Boadwine have expressed enthusiasm for the economic and environmental benefits of implementing anaerobic digestion on their farms.
