Braskem launches Blooming Future LR1 chemical/product tanker

Key highlights
  • Maiden voyage of Blooming Future was launched and the vessel was formally named on May 8 in China.
  • Blooming Future is an LR1 IMO Type 3 chemical and product oil tanker with biofuel‑ready engines and energy‑efficient systems.
  • Braskem expects the vessel to emit about 30% less CO2 than its average ships, reducing roughly 6,500 tonnes of CO2 per year.
  • The vessel is part of a fleet expansion to operate four LR1 tankers by early 2027 and can carry cargo equivalent to about 35 Olympic swimming pools.

Launch and naming

Braskem Trading & Shipping has put the LR1 tanker Blooming Future into service; the vessel was formally named at a ceremony in China on May 8. The ship will carry naphtha to support Braskem's industrial production and operate at optimized speed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Design and operations

Built as an IMO Type 3 specialized chemical and product oil tanker, Blooming Future includes biofuel‑ready engines and energy‑efficient systems. Braskem highlights the vessel's scale — described as being as wide as a six‑lane highway and able to hold cargo equivalent to roughly 35 Olympic size swimming pools — and cites safety, reliability, and sustainability as design priorities.

Emissions and fleet plan

The vessel is expected to emit approximately 30% less CO2 than Braskem's average vessels, an estimated reduction of about 6,500 tonnes of CO2 per year. Blooming Future is part of a broader program under which Braskem Trading & Shipping aims to operate four LR1 tankers by early 2027.
