bp Expands SAF Production with Five New Projects

Key highlights
  • bp aims to produce 100,000 barrels of biofuels per day by 2030.
  • Five SAF projects are planned in Australia, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, and the US.
  • These projects are expected to yield 50,000 barrels per day by 2030.
  • bp's Brazil joint venture targets 30,000 barrels per day by 2030.

SAF Production Goals

bp is targeting a significant increase in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, aiming for 100,000 barrels per day by 2030. This move is part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector, which is considered challenging to decarbonize.

Global Biofuel Projects

To achieve these production targets, bp has announced plans for five biofuel projects focused on SAF across various locations worldwide. These projects will be situated in Kwinana, Australia; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Castellón, Spain; Lingen, Germany; and Cherry Point, US. By 2030, these facilities are expected to collectively produce around 50,000 barrels of SAF per day.

Brazil Joint Venture

In addition to these projects, bp's joint venture in Brazil, bp Bunge Bioenergia, is set to contribute significantly to the company's SAF production goals. As one of the largest bio-ethanol producers in Brazil, the joint venture aims to produce approximately 30,000 barrels per day by 2030, net to bp.
