Ørsted and Nuveen: Borkum Riffgrund 3 enters commercial operation

Operation and scale
Borkum Riffgrund 3, jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure, has been commissioned and is now in commercial operation with an installed capacity of 913 MW. The offshore wind farm comprises 83 turbines rated at 11 MW each and covers an area of approximately 75 km² located about 72 km off the German North Sea coast.
Offtake and industrial decarbonisation
Ørsted has signed long-term corporate power purchase agreements totalling 786 MW with industrial and technology customers to supply data centres, retailers and the chemical industry. Offtake partners include Amazon, BASF, Covestro, Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group and Google, with contract durations ranging from 10 to 25 years to provide reliable, home-grown electricity.
Supply chain and local value
The project mobilised a broad European supply chain, using turbines and foundations from Germany and Denmark, cables from Germany and France, and installation vessels from the Netherlands and Belgium. Around 100 German companies were contracted for construction, and operation and maintenance for the farm and Ørsted’s German portfolio will be carried out from Norden-Norddeich and Emden.
Strategic context
The commissioning advances Ørsted’s 8.1 GW offshore wind construction programme and increases the company’s installed offshore capacity in Germany to about 2.5 GW, reinforcing domestic renewable generation and supporting Germany’s energy security and industrial decarbonisation. Ørsted accounts for roughly 25% of Germany’s installed offshore wind capacity.
