Bayer refocuses Crop Science R&D and production in Germany on strategic technologies

At a glance
  • Production in Frankfurt ends by 2028, with some activities sold or relocated.
  • R&D activities consolidate in Monheim, focusing on herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.
  • Dormagen site streamlines, impacting 200 positions, focusing on strategic technologies.

Reorganization of Crop Science Division

Bayer is restructuring its Crop Science division in Germany to enhance global competitiveness. The focus will shift towards strategic, innovative technologies and products that offer unique value compared to generic alternatives. This decision is driven by overcapacity in the market, particularly from Asian manufacturers, and increasing regulatory challenges.

Changes in Production and R&D

By the end of 2028, Bayer will cease production activities in Frankfurt, which currently employs around 500 people. Some operations will be sold, while others will move to Dormagen and Knapsack or integrate into the European formulation network. Research and development will consolidate in Monheim am Rhein, where Bayer is already developing insecticides and fungicides. This move aims to strengthen Monheim as a central hub for crop protection R&D.

Impact on Dormagen Site

The Dormagen site will remain a key production facility, focusing on innovative and strategic products. Production of generic active ingredients will be phased out, affecting approximately 200 positions out of 1,200. Bayer is working with employee representatives to find socially responsible solutions for affected staff.

Strategic Framework and Future Outlook

The reorganization aligns with Bayer's five-year framework to address challenges in the Crop Science division and maintain global competitiveness. The company aims to leverage its strengths in innovation to launch new technologies that enhance food security. Several major products are expected to emerge from the R&D pipeline over the next decade, reinforcing Bayer's commitment to innovation in crop protection.
