Bayer and Iberdrola España to Electrify and Decarbonize Asturias Plant

At a glance
  • The project has a budget of €17M and aims for completion by June 2026.
  • Bayer's Asturias plant will produce acetylsalicylic acid using renewable steam.
  • The initiative is supported by Spain's Ministry of Industry and IDAE.
  • The project will create over 30 jobs during construction and commissioning.

Project Overview

Bayer and Iberdrola España have partnered to electrify Bayer's La Felguera plant in Asturias, aiming to decarbonize the facility by using renewable energy for steam production. This initiative is part of a broader effort to decarbonize the Asturian mining area and is the first heat purchase agreement of its kind in Spain.

Technology and Implementation

Iberdrola España will install a thermal storage system designed by Inerco, converting renewable electricity into steam. This system allows the plant to use energy produced during peak renewable generation hours, enhancing flexibility and operational savings. The project leverages Spain's renewable potential and aims to reduce CO2 emissions and fossil fuel dependency.

Investment and Timeline

The project has a budget of €17 million and is expected to be completed by June 2026. It has received support from the Ministry of Industry’s PERTE for industrial decarbonization and the Institute for the Diversification and Savings of Energy (IDAE).

Impact and Future Prospects

The initiative will create over 30 jobs during its construction and commissioning phases, contributing to the region's industrial competitiveness. The heat generation facility will also supply renewable heat to the Asturian public health service’s future central laundry complex. The project is part of a broader collaboration with the Just Transition Institute, which supports regions and workers in the energy transition.

Significance

This project positions Bayer's Asturias plant as a leader in sustainable industrial practices, being the first in its sector in Spain to decarbonize. It also sets a precedent for future projects in Spain and globally, promoting the use of renewable energy in industrial processes.
