BASF Expands Polyamide Portfolio in Europe with Solvay Acquisition

At a glance
  • BASF acquired Solvay's PA66 business, integrating it into its Performance Materials and Monomers divisions.
  • The acquisition was approved by the European Commission in January 2019, with conditions expiring in 2020.
  • Ultramid\u00ae One J, a PPA based on PA66/6T, will be marketed in Europe.
  • BASF now covers the entire value chain for polyamide 66, improving supply reliability.

Acquisition Overview

BASF has acquired Solvay’s PA66 business, which includes several polyamide (PA) and polyphthalamide (PPA) grades. These engineering plastics, previously sold under the Technyl® brand, will now be marketed by BASF under the Ultramid® brand.

Regulatory Approval and Market Expansion

The European Commission approved the acquisition in January 2019, subject to certain conditions, including the sale of Solvay’s polyamide 66 production plants in Europe. With these conditions now expired, BASF will introduce these grades to the European market, having already successfully sold them in Asia and the Americas.

Product Integration

Ultramid® One J, a PPA based on PA66/6T, will be integrated into BASF’s existing PPA portfolio, marketed under the Ultramid® Advanced brand since 2016. This high-performance plastic offers outstanding mechanical and dielectric properties, low water absorption, and high flowability, making it suitable for small and complex components with electrical protection.

Supply Chain and Value Chain

With the acquisition, BASF now covers the entire value chain for polyamide 66, thanks to backward integration for the key raw material adiponitrile (ADN). This enhances BASF’s supply reliability and strengthens its position in the market.
