- Production of adipic acid, CDon, and CPon at Ludwigshafen will end in 2025.
- CDon and CPon plant shutdown is scheduled for the first half of 2025.
- Approximately 180 employees will be affected by the closures.
- Adipic acid production will continue in Onsan, South Korea, and Chalampé, France.
Plant Closures at Ludwigshafen
BASF will cease production of adipic acid, cyclododecanone (CDon), and cyclopentanone (CPon) at its Ludwigshafen site. The CDon and CPon production plant will shut down in the first half of 2025, with the remaining adipic acid production ending later in the year. This decision is part of a strategic review to maintain competitiveness amid changing market conditions.
Impact on Employees
Approximately 180 employees will be affected by these closures. BASF has committed to supporting these employees in finding new job opportunities within the BASF Group.
Continued Production Elsewhere
Despite the closures at Ludwigshafen, BASF will continue producing adipic acid at its facilities in Onsan, South Korea, and through a joint venture in Chalampé, France. This ensures ongoing supply for various applications, including polyamides, polyurethanes, coatings, and adhesives.
Product Applications
CDon is a key raw material for producing lauryl lactam, used in high-performance plastic polyamide 12 (PA 12), musk fragrances, and UV stabilizers. CPon serves as a building block for crop protection agents, active pharmaceutical ingredients, semiconductor solvents, and special fragrances. Adipic acid is essential for manufacturing polyamides, polyurethanes, coatings, and adhesives.
