Introduction of Biomass-Balanced Products
BASF has introduced its first biomass-balanced (BMB) ammonia and urea products, expanding its ammonia value chain. The new offerings include ammonia anhydrous BMBcertTM, ammonia solution 24.5% BMBcertTM, urea prills BMBcertTM, urea solution 40% BMBcertTM, and urea solution 45% BMBcertTM.
Sustainable Production Process
The company employs a biomass balance approach, replacing fossil resources with certified biowaste raw materials at the start of production. These products are certified according to ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) PLUS standards. Additionally, BASF uses renewable electricity in the manufacturing process, further reducing production-related emissions.
Reduction in Carbon Footprint
These measures result in a product carbon footprint (PCF) reduction of at least 80% compared to conventional fossil ammonia derivatives. The certified BMBcertTM products help customers lower their scope 3 emissions and the carbon footprint of their own products.
Future Sustainability Goals
The introduction of the BMB ammonia derivative portfolio is part of BASF’s Monomers division's sustainability roadmap. The division aims to develop at least one circular or lower PCF option for every major product line by 2025. This initiative is a crucial component of BASF’s broader goal to achieve climate neutrality and net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
