Axens chosen by Expander Energy for FT liquids upgrading to produce 2G drop-in biofuels
- Axens will provide its FT Liquid Upgrading technology to Expander Energy to support production of drop-in, second-generation biofuels.
- The technology will be integrated with Expander’s EBTL® (Enhanced Biomass to Liquids) and BETL® (Biomass Electrolysis to Liquids) processes to convert cellulosic feedstock.
- Initial deployments are planned at Wheatland Bio-Synfuels Facility near Calgary, Alberta, and Mackenzie Biomass Derived E-Fuels Facility in northern British Columbia.
- Both projects are advancing regulatory and financing milestones with a final investment decision targeted for December 2026, and Axens is named strategic upgrading provider for Expander’s broader SAF and Arctic renewable diesel portfolio.
Scope of award
Axens has been selected by Expander Energy to provide its advanced FT Liquid Upgrading technology to support production of drop-in, second-generation biofuels from cellulosic feedstock through Expander’s patented Enhanced Biomass to Liquids (EBTL®) and Biomass Electrolysis to Liquids (BETL®) processes.
Deployment sites
The technology is expected to be deployed first at two commercial developments in Canada: Wheatland Bio-Synfuels Facility, near Calgary, Alberta, and Mackenzie Biomass Derived E-Fuels Facility, in northern British Columbia.
Schedule and strategic role
Both projects are progressing through key regulatory and financing milestones, with a final investment decision targeted for December 2026. Beyond the initial project awards, Expander Energy has also selected Axens as its strategic upgrading technology provider for a broader portfolio of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Arctic renewable diesel developments.
