Wheatland Synfuels Inc. is a joint venture company formed to own and operate the Wheatland Synfuels Complex, an expanded synthetic and bio-synthetic fuels facility near Carseland, Alberta, Canada. This includes acquiring and upgrading the base GTL facility (CA0 stage) with isomerization and hydrogen purification units, followed by integration of biomass gasification units (CA1 and CA2 stages) using Expander's EBTL® (Enhanced Biomass to Liquids) process. Key technologies encompass ETI Tar-Free Gasifiers, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, Axens upgrading, and integrated Biomass Energy with Carbon Capture and Sequestration (BECCS) for near-zero or net-negative carbon intensity.
At full commercial scale targeted for 2028-2029, the facility is designed to process cellulosic biomass feedstocks such as landfill-redirected wood waste and construction debris to yield approximately 25-28 million liters per year of Bio-SynDiesel®, Bio-SynJet® (sustainable aviation fuel), bio-naphtha, and bio-wax. Operations are located in Alberta's Wheatland County, leveraging local resources and infrastructure near Calgary.
Ownership is structured as a 50/50-style joint venture between Expander Energy Inc., a Calgary-based clean technology firm specializing in biomass-to-liquids and BECCS solutions, and Rocky Mountain Clean Fuels Inc., a leader in synthetic fuel production from natural gas.
