Restart and restoration

MOL has restarted the AV3 crude oil distillation unit at the Danube Refinery after a nearly year-long restoration following a fire on October 20, 2025.

Cost and capacity

The restoration was completed with a budget of approximately 18 billion forints (USD 56 million). The AV3 unit returned to operation at its original technological capacity; the work did not include any capacity expansion.

Supply implications

MOL said the restart allows the refinery to operate at full capacity again, increasing the company’s supply capacity and strengthening fuel supply security for Hungary and the wider region. Over the past year MOL maintained continuous fuel supply despite the significant loss of capacity at the Danube Refinery, and the country did not face a fuel shortage.

Ongoing priorities

Company leadership noted the restoration met the planned deadline and emphasized that ensuring safe operations and preventing similar accidents remain primary responsibilities.
