Background

Asfaltos Españoles, S.A. (ASESA) has been operating in Tarragona's industrial area since 1965, focusing on petroleum refining to produce bitumen. In 2010, ASESA diversified into power generation.

HE-Cogeneration Plant

The High Efficiency Cogeneration Plant, with a 14.25 MWh output, was established in 2010 with an investment of 12.4 million euros. This facility not only meets the refinery's power needs but also exports approximately 11 MWh to the grid.

Environmental Impact

The plant contributes significantly to reducing CO2 emissions, cutting 21,500 tons annually. Additionally, ASESA's Savings Plan and Energy Efficiency 2010-2014 initiative has reduced fuel consumption by 9%, further decreasing CO2 emissions by 4,500 tons per year.

Production Capacity

ASESA holds a 2% refining capacity in Spain and leads the national bitumen production with a 45% share. The company employs 115 people directly and generates indirect employment for 80 people regularly, which can increase to 350 during specific downtimes.
