AnQore and Dutch Government Advance CO₂ Reduction Efforts

Key highlights
  • AnQore plans a new thermal oxidation facility to cut CO₂-equivalent emissions by 365 kton by 2029.
  • The project aims to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 50%, natural gas usage by 25%, and water consumption by 17%.
  • The investment is valued at €120 million, with up to €46 million in support from the Dutch Climate Fund.
  • A final investment decision is expected later this year, pending EU ETS inclusion and financial clarity.

Joint Initiative for Emission Reduction

On July 8, AnQore signed a Joint Letter of Intent with the Dutch Ministries of Climate & Green Growth and Infrastructure & Water Management, along with the Province of Limburg. This collaboration aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions at AnQore’s Chemelot site in the Netherlands.

Emission Reduction Targets

AnQore plans to construct a new thermal oxidation facility to cut CO₂-equivalent emissions by 365 kton by 2029, achieving nearly a 70% reduction compared to 2020 levels. The project also targets a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions, a 25% decrease in natural gas usage, and a 17% reduction in water consumption.

Financial and Regulatory Support

The initiative's success depends on a binding agreement and sufficient financial backing. The Dutch Climate Fund has reserved up to €46 million to support the €120 million investment, keeping the societal cost per avoided tonne of CO₂ below €15. The JLoI includes commitments to incorporate nitrous oxide emissions from acrylonitrile production into the EU ETS, allowing AnQore to use emission rights for financing.

Next Steps

A final investment decision is expected later this year, contingent on key regulatory developments, including the EU ETS inclusion decision anticipated after the summer, and further clarity on financial support.
