ADNOC approves FID for Ruwais Diyab unconventional gas project
- ADNOC has taken final investment decision for the Ruwais Diyab unconventional gas development in Abu Dhabi.
- The project will deliver 345 million standard cubic feet per day of raw gas from 2029 for 25 years, with potential to reach up to 1 billion scfd.
- Gas will be processed on site and connected to the UAE gas network via new pipeline infrastructure to support domestic supply and ADNOC’s LNG ambitions.
- Development is delivered by ADNOC Onshore under a design‑build‑operate model, using advanced subsurface expertise, AI‑enabled drilling and field testing to reduce risk.
Project FID and scale
ADNOC has taken a final investment decision for the Ruwais Diyab Unconventional Gas Development in Abu Dhabi, its first large-scale unconventional gas development. The project is expected to deliver 345 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of raw gas from 2029 over a 25-year period, with potential to scale up to 1 billion scfd.
Processing and market role
Gas will be processed on site and connected to the UAE gas network via new pipeline infrastructure, strengthening domestic supply and supporting industrial growth as well as ADNOC’s liquefied natural gas export plans.
Delivery model and technologies
The development follows a programme of technical studies, field testing and subsurface analysis and will be delivered by ADNOC Onshore under a design-build-operate (DBO) model. It integrates advanced subsurface expertise, AI-enabled drilling and completion technologies to reduce development risk and establish a scalable unconventional gas business platform.
Strategic context
The UAE holds the seventh-largest gas reserves in the world with 298 trillion standard cubic feet of conventional gas reserves and 160 trillion standard cubic feet of unconventional gas resources; Ruwais Diyab is intended to unlock more of these resources to meet rising domestic and international demand for reliable, lower-carbon gas.
