Plant Expansion and Timeline
After 18 months of construction, BASF's new plant expansion for the chelating agent Trilon® M in Ludwigshafen, Germany, has been brought on stream three months ahead of schedule. This expansion has created 18 new jobs at the site.
Production Capacity
The new facility increases BASF's global annual production capacity for chelating agents to 120,000 tonnes. This expansion is in response to the growing global demand for modern, eco-friendly chelating agents.
Global Manufacturing
In addition to Ludwigshafen, BASF manufactures chelating agents in Lima, Ohio, USA, and Guaratinguetá, Brazil. Trilon M can be produced in both Lima and Ludwigshafen, ensuring global availability.
Trilon M Characteristics
Trilon M, or methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA), is a high-performance, eco-friendly chelating agent in the aminocarboxylates class. It reduces metal ion concentrations in aqueous solutions, enhancing the cleaning effect of detergents and industrial cleaners.
Sustainability and Applications
Trilon M is readily biodegradable, available in liquid and solid forms, and does not require risk phrase labeling under EU legislation. It is suitable for use in modern dishwasher detergents as a phosphate replacement and in industrial applications as a no-labeling-required alternative to conventional chelating agents.
