De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is a publicly owned limited liability company and autonomous agency of the Flemish Government responsible for the sustainable management, operation, maintenance, and commercialization of inland waterways in Flanders, Belgium.
It oversees approximately 1,076 km of navigable canals and rivers—including the Albert Canal, Scheldt, Leie, Flemish section of the Brussels-Charleroi Canal, Campine Canals, and common Meuse—as well as 131 locks, 800 bridges, 195 km of quay walls, and nearly 6,600 hectares of public domain along these waterways.
Employing around 1,250 staff from its headquarters in Hasselt and regional offices, the agency promotes inland navigation for freight and passenger transport, water management to mitigate floods and shortages, and recreational use including pleasure boating, tourism, and nature experiences. Recent initiatives include quay extensions and concessions supporting sustainable waste transport projects via inland vessels.
