Statens Serum Institut

About SSI

Statens Serum Institut (SSI) is Denmark’s national public health and research institute, based in Copenhagen and operating under the Danish Ministry of Health. It focuses on preventing and controlling infectious diseases and other health threats through science, surveillance, and laboratory services.

SSI runs national reference laboratories for microbiology, provides diagnostic testing and quality assurance, and monitors disease trends to inform health authorities and clinicians. The institute conducts research in epidemiology, immunology, and microbiology; evaluates vaccines and diagnostics; and supports outbreak investigation, pandemic preparedness, and biodefense. It maintains key national health data resources, including registries and biobanking infrastructure, to enable evidence-based public health and clinical research. SSI collaborates with domestic and international partners, such as European and global health agencies, to strengthen disease control and antimicrobial resistance initiatives. Historically involved in vaccine production, SSI today concentrates on research, surveillance, reference diagnostics, and preparedness while partnering with public and private stakeholders.
