Stiftelsen for industriell og teknisk forskning (SINTEF)

About Sintef

Stiftelsen for industriell og teknisk forskning (SINTEF) is an independent, not‑for‑profit research foundation based in Norway, established in 1950 and historically linked to the Norwegian Institute of Technology (now NTNU). It operates research institutes in Trondheim, Oslo, and other locations, and is among Europe’s largest independent R&D organizations, working with both public and private sectors.

For the chemical and process industries, SINTEF conducts applied research in areas such as catalysis and reaction engineering, separation processes, process intensification, carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen and ammonia value chains, battery and electrochemical technologies, polymers and composites, materials science, and bio-based and circular processes. Activities span laboratory studies, modeling and simulation, pilot-scale testing, and verification, with an emphasis on industrial relevance, safety, and environmental performance.

SINTEF’s structure includes divisions such as SINTEF Industry, Energy, Ocean, Digital, Manufacturing, and Community, enabling cross-disciplinary projects at the interface of chemistry, materials, and engineering. Earnings are reinvested in research competence and infrastructure. SINTEF collaborates extensively with universities (notably NTNU) and participates in national and international research programs and consortia.
