Project STOP is a circular-economy initiative co-founded by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ to design, implement, and scale waste management systems that prevent plastic leakage into the environment, with a primary focus on Indonesia. Working in partnership with municipal authorities, communities, and industry, it establishes collection, sorting, recycling, and safe disposal services to increase recovery of polyolefins and other plastics and enable supply of higher-quality recycled materials. The program is supported by a mix of corporate, philanthropic, and public-sector partners.
Project STOP develops city-level partnerships, builds and operates infrastructure, trains local operators, integrates informal collectors, and creates financially sustainable municipal services aligned with emerging extended producer responsibility frameworks. It measures environmental and social outcomes—such as reductions in marine litter and job creation—while linking post-consumer plastic streams to recycling value chains. The initiative is relevant to the chemical and plastics sectors by helping secure feedstock for recycled polymers and advancing circularity targets across the region.
