About PowerCo

PowerCo is the Volkswagen Group’s dedicated battery company, responsible for developing, industrializing, and manufacturing lithium-ion battery cells and systems for electric vehicles. Its scope spans the full battery value chain, including cell chemistry and process R&D, factory planning and operations, sourcing of key raw materials, quality and safety, and end-of-life solutions such as reuse and recycling. The company primarily supplies Volkswagen Group vehicle plants and supports the Group’s transition to electrified platforms.

PowerCo is building a standardized, large-scale “unified cell” production platform and an international manufacturing footprint, beginning in Europe with flagship sites in Germany and Spain and evaluating further locations. Its operating model emphasizes high-volume, cost-competitive output, secure supply chains, and energy-efficient, low-carbon production powered by renewables and closed-loop material flows. For the chemicals value chain, PowerCo is a buyer and developer of cathode and anode active materials, electrolytes, binders, and related process chemicals, and collaborates with suppliers and research partners to scale sustainable battery materials and processes.
