About PowerCo

PowerCo is the Volkswagen Group’s battery company, established to develop, industrialize, and manufacture lithium‑ion battery cells and systems for electric vehicles. Headquartered in Salzgitter, Germany, it oversees the end‑to‑end battery value chain, including cell technology development, raw‑material sourcing, production equipment, supply chain management, and recycling.

The company is rolling out a standardized “unified cell” platform designed to accommodate multiple chemistries, such as NMC and LFP, to simplify production and reduce costs. Its manufacturing footprint includes large‑scale cell plants in Salzgitter (Germany) and Sagunto/Valencia (Spain), with further sites planned in Europe and North America. Facilities are designed to run on renewable electricity and support closed‑loop material flows.

For the chemical industry, PowerCo is a major buyer and developer of cathode and anode active materials, electrolytes, binders, and separators, and it collaborates across the supply chain to localize and secure key inputs such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and iron phosphate. The company invests in process technology across slurry preparation, coating and calendering, formation, and quality control, and advances recycling to recover critical materials for re‑use in new cells.
