Porthos Carbon Capture and Storage

About Porthos CCS

Porthos Carbon Capture and Storage (Porthos CCS) is a Dutch CO2 transport and storage project serving the Rotterdam industrial cluster. Developed by a joint venture of EBN, Gasunie and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Porthos will provide shared infrastructure to collect carbon dioxide from multiple industrial emitters, compress it, and transport it via an onshore pipeline to a compressor station at Maasvlakte. From there, CO2 is sent through an offshore pipeline to a North Sea platform for injection into depleted gas fields deep beneath the seabed.

The system is designed to store about 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year for roughly 15 years (around 37 million tonnes in total). Initial shippers include Air Liquide, Air Products, ExxonMobil and Shell under long-term transport and storage agreements. Following a final investment decision in 2023, construction is underway with first CO2 storage targeted in the mid‑2020s. Porthos is a key element of Dutch and EU decarbonization plans and operates under approvals including EU state aid clearance for the project.
