About Monsanto

Monsanto Company was a U.S.-based agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology firm headquartered in the St. Louis, Missouri area (Creve Coeur). In 2018 it was acquired by Bayer AG and integrated into Bayer’s Crop Science division; the Monsanto name is no longer used commercially.

Before the acquisition, Monsanto developed and supplied crop protection products—most notably glyphosate-based herbicides sold under the Roundup brand—and created genetically engineered seeds and agronomic traits for major row crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and canola. Its portfolio also included dicamba herbicide formulations paired with compatible trait systems, as well as digital agriculture services via The Climate Corporation. Monsanto maintained a global R&D, breeding, and trait-licensing network. The company was founded in 1901, and its legacy industrial chemical operations were spun off as Solutia in 1997.
