Japan Bank for International Cooperation

About JBIC

Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) is Japan’s policy-based financial institution, wholly owned by the Government of Japan and operating under the Ministry of Finance. Established by statute and re-established as an independent entity in 2012, JBIC supports the overseas development of Japanese industry, the security of energy and mineral resources, the maintenance of international financial stability, and global environmental initiatives. It provides loans, guarantees, and equity investments, frequently in co-financing with commercial banks and other public lenders.

JBIC is active in large industrial, energy, and infrastructure projects worldwide, including areas relevant to the chemical sector such as petrochemicals, fertilizers, LNG, hydrogen and ammonia supply chains, battery materials, and carbon management (e.g., CCS/CCUS). Its instruments span export and investment loans, project finance, and support for overseas acquisitions and plant/equipment procurement. JBIC applies environmental and social review guidelines to its financing and often collaborates with export credit agencies and multilateral institutions to mobilize capital for complex projects.
