The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a global, not-for-profit standards organization that develops and publishes International Standards for electrical, electronic and related technologies, and operates conformity assessment systems. Founded in 1906 and headquartered in Geneva, it brings together national committees from around the world to enable safety, interoperability and performance across power systems, industrial equipment, electronics and emerging technologies.
For the chemical industry, IEC standards and schemes are widely used to specify, test and certify electrical equipment and materials used in plants and infrastructure. This includes requirements for equipment in explosive atmospheres (IECEx), product safety and performance (IECEE), control and automation systems, power distribution, and methods for assessing properties of insulating materials. Adoption of IEC documents supports plant safety, regulatory compliance and seamless global sourcing of compliant equipment and components.
