Hive Energy is a United Kingdom-based renewable energy project developer focused on utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects and the advancement of green hydrogen and green ammonia technologies. Founded in 2010 by Giles Redpath, the company has completed or sold dozens of solar projects generating thousands of megawatts of capacity across more than 20 countries, including the UK, Spain, Italy, Greece, New Zealand, and various Latin American and African markets.
The firm maintains an extensive international pipeline of renewable developments and has expanded into clean fuels, notably through its majority ownership in Hive Hydrogen South Africa. Hive Energy holds a 75% stake in Hive Hydrogen South Africa (HHSA), with the remaining 25% held by BuiltAfrica. HHSA is developing the Coega Green Ammonia Plant, a major new-build facility in the Coega Special Economic Zone near Gqeberha in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.
This project, powered by dedicated renewable solar and wind generation totaling nearly 3 GW, targets production of approximately 1 million metric tons per year of green ammonia for export to Europe, Asia, and other markets, with commercial operations anticipated around 2030-2031. Hive Energy also pursues circular economy investments and has operations supporting land restoration and sustainable technologies. The company underwent administration proceedings in early 2026, after which its business and assets, including the trading name, were transferred to a related entity, allowing continued project development under the Hive Energy brand.
