Hive Hydrogen South Africa (HHSA) is a private company incorporated in South Africa in 2021. It operates as a joint venture developing large-scale renewable energy projects focused on green hydrogen and green ammonia production.
The company's primary activity is the advancement of the Coega Green Ammonia Project in the Coega Special Economic Zone, adjacent to the Port of Ngqura in Gqeberha (Nelson Mandela Bay), Eastern Cape province. The project involves construction of a green ammonia production facility with capacity exceeding one million tonnes per year, powered by dedicated renewable generation assets including solar PV clusters (around 1,430 MW) and wind farms (around 1,880 MW or more), totaling over 2,900 MW. It incorporates solid oxide electrolyser technology, Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis, seawater desalination, and nitrogen extraction from air, with output intended for export markets in Europe, the Far East, and the United States, as well as potential domestic use.
HHSA is 75% owned by UK-based Hive Energy and 25% by South African infrastructure developer BuiltAfrica Group. The entity has progressed through feasibility, environmental authorisations, technology selections (including Topsoe equipment), and front-end engineering design contracts, positioning the initiative as a flagship or "lighthouse" project for South Africa's green hydrogen ambitions and the EU's Global Gateway programme in the country. It is expected to support significant local employment, industrial development, and the just energy transition.
